Born Vera Ann Farmiga on August 6, 1973, in Clifton, New Jersey, to Ukrainian parents, Lubomyra, a schoolteacher, and Michael Farmiga, a computer systems analyst, her early life hinted at a different path. The second of seven children, Farmiga’s upbringing was steeped in Ukrainian culture, a heritage that continues to resonate in her life. Young Vera, a self-described shy and nearsighted child, found solace in music, playing the piano and engaging in folk dancing with a Ukrainian touring company during her teenage years. In 1991, she graduated from Hunterdon Central Regional High School, seemingly poised for a conventional career. Her initial aspiration was to become an optometrist, a practical choice far removed from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. However, fate, or perhaps an undeniable inner calling, intervened. She later shifted her focus, deciding to study acting at Syracuse University's School of Performing Arts.
